NEW CAREER-ORIENTED MENTORING PROGRAM:
Volunteers needed for Speakers List
Introductory Note: In the Fall 2003 issue of Lion’s Pride, an excellent article written by Cinzia Marino (87) explained her reasons for wanting to establish a mentorship program at South. In the year and a half since that article was written, Cinza has been working to put together a committee of volunteers interested in developing such a program. For, as Cinzia noted in her article, “We have a vast base of knowledge and experience within our alumni, and I, for one, would like to start to contribute or at least offer some assistance to the high school students currently enrolled at South.”
Despite a rather disappointing response to date, the SCAA executive has not given up on the idea of establishing a mentorship program. At the January executive meeting, (See the “News Items” section for a report of the meeting highlights), it was the focus of a discussion, which included input from a teacher in South’s Student Services Department, Steve McNeill.
As a result of this discussion, the SCAA executive decided that the best place to begin was to put together a “Speakers List”. This list would consist of the names of South alumni (involved in as wide a variety of careers as possible), who are willing to “donate” an hour or two of their time to talk to classes about their chosen career. Such “guest speakers” could make a valuable curriculum contribution, not only to the grade 10 Careers Course, but also to a number of other courses.
If you are willing to become a member of our Speakers List and volunteer even an hour of your time to talk to students about your chosen career, then please e-mail us at contact@southalumni.ca.
